Many of us have heard childhood stories of  pixies and sprites, dancing in the forest to the melodies of their tiny little flutes . . . but there are those who still believe in faeries, and their ability to work with us to perform healing in the natural world.

The entrance to the realm of the faeries is often found in  raths (hills or mounds) or in large knotted trees (usually a lone tree in a field).  The faeries guard the entrance very tightly, as they tend to be distrustful of humans.  One should never enter the faerie realm without permission . . . legend has it that those who wander into the faeries' territory will fall into a deep sleep.  Keep in mind . . . one night in the faerie realm is said to be the equivalent of years to us.  Faeries are willing to share with those who are pure of heart and who wish to learn from them.  Those who seek out faeries out of selfish curiosity are often met with nasty pranks!  To seek friendship with the faeries, you must have pure intentions, a good sense of humor, a playful spirit, and a healthy respect for the magick of the fae.  It is said that a circle of wild mushrooms in a field marks the spot of a faerie ring.  Be mindful of faerie spots, and do not disturb their habitat . . . one of the reasons the wee folk are so weary of humans is our tendency to abuse  nature.

Many people plant faerie gardens, with all of the wee ones' favorite flowers and plants, to attract these mysterious little ones.  Faeries love shiny things . . . try placing a metallic or reflective orb in your garden.  Some people leave offerings of cream, honey, or other tasty treats at the close of their rituals - to honor the wee folk and entice them to visit again.

Faeries are associated with the element of Air.  The Air elemental is the sylph - commonly associated with faeries, fireflies, or butterflies.  Faeries are playful and joyous to have around when working magick, however you should be careful . . . some of them enjoy wreaking sheer havoc - whether it be in a playful spirit or not.  Faeries can also drive your pets bonkers with their flitting about . . . and get a big kick out of it.
